Paul Merson states his prediction for Southampton v Man United

Paul Merson is tipping Manchester United to continue their strong start to the new Premier League season by beating Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s team have been earning plenty of praise for their performances so far this term after having kicked off the campaign in style.

The Red Devils have won four of their opening five Premier League games so far this term and they currently are joint top of the table along with local rivals Manchester City.

Manchester United thrashed Everton 4-0 last weekend to notch up their third win of the season by the same scoreline, and they also beat Burton Albion 4-1 on Wednesday to reach the fourth round of the League Cup.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is tipping the Red Devils to continue their fine start with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Saints on Saturday.

Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports: “Southampton produced a big performance at Crystal Palace. They are a funny team, winning that came quite easily after flopping at home to Watford.

“Their problem is obviously the lack of goals and that will be an issue against a quality team like Manchester United.

“I’ve not completely bought into the United hype just yet – people are raving about them but I thought Everton were bang unlucky for 20 minutes at the start of the second half at Old Trafford.

“In the end United produced a flurry of late goals, like they did against Swansea, and the score looked much better than the game suggested.

“This is a big test for United but I think they pass it.”

Manchester United finished in a disappointing sixth place in the Premier League table but made up for it by winning both the League Cup and Europa League under Mourinho last term.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge in 2012-13.
